Well hello there! Did you know that this year is Hand Eye Society’s 10-year anniversary of running events, workshops, festivals, taking over spaces and more? It’s truly incredible. I’m even having a hard time processing it and I’ve been working behind the scenes! But this year, we’re doing MORE! More than we’ve ever done before because for one, we love the games community in Toronto and we want to celebrate everything we’ve accomplished together! Since 2009 Hand Eye Society has been exploring games, playful experience, and experimental projects as we broaden the definition of art. We’re excited to keep exploring with you all of the ways we can enjoy playing and making games. That being said, introducing Super FESTival!

What is Super FESTival?

Super FESTival is an online celebration of the past decade of Hand Eye Society programming. One festival to rule them all! Over the years, we’ve hosted so many events, workshops, meetups (remember those?), festivals and we’ve been so happy to see people in games, or even game-curious step into our world to see what making games is all about! We want to continue that by creating a festival that showcases all we do, all we’ve done, and what you can expect from us in the future of creating community spaces to learn, play and share experiences about making games! It makes us so happy that we’re able to do all this and share this with you and we want you to leave with a memory that anyone and everyone can make and celebrate the world of videogames!

 

When & Where is Super FESTival?

Excited about what’s to come from Super FESTival? You should be! This festival is going to be HUGE. Bigger than Comics x Games, bigger than Wordplay…maybe even bigger than the Hand Eye Society Ball! (I miss dancing with y’all 😭) But we’re SO excited that this festival is coming because we know you’re going to love it! That being said, Join us! Submit your games, pitches and talks! We want to hear from you regardless of games industry experience! We all have something to say about games, and now’s the time to show the world! What’s the Theme?

I’m glad you asked! You know we love a good theme, and we wanted to pick one that we think a lot of people had on their minds for the past few years and beyond! The theme of Super FESTival is Perseverance.

Games and play are acknowledged as important tools in understanding cultures and history. However, games can also be postured as a way to better imagine and design the underlying systems that form the basis of our collective realities. From escapism to political action, games and play are an important tool to understanding the world. Understanding this significance requires that people—students and educators, children and parents, urban planners, politicians, and everyone in between—play games, understand them, and use them as a conduit to communicate their experiences to others through a daunting medium that combines the knowledge of countless different fields.

Making games is the perseverance of hope; it requires us to look at the world so we may imagine and create a better one. Despite the daunting challenges of the Pandemic, incredible work has been done over the past two years—new studios, unionization, money raised, worlds to explore—to persevere and we’re here to celebrate it. To everyone who had made art despite the world, for every dollar raised, for all of the work it took to take us here: thank you. Your work gives us hope. We want to make games that share that hope and that is the work we will celebrate here.
